Miles High - Cross tail 2m Glider ~ Fuselage Pod / Fin / Tail & Wing Ribs Short Kit

This short kit contains parts for the fuselage pod, tail and wing ribs. The original Miles build plan is included for the wing construction and digital build instructions for the fuselage are provided by email. This is not a full kit, additional materials will be required to complete this model.

What you will need in addition to complete the Fuselage/tail/wing:

  • Carbon boom - finished length 770 long.

  • Carbon boom direct from www.freeflightsupplies.co.uk (F1A - 17.5 mm to 10.2 mm x 950 mm - 22 gm - £20.00 plus post)

  • Control push rod set - I use 0.74mm 22SWG Stainless Steel Wire (1.5 m)

  • Wing retaining nuts & bolts to suit your wing design

  • Wing spars, sheeting, LE/TE strip wood, wing joiners etc

  • Covering material

Miles High Fuselage:

This fuselage is designed by Steve Haley and aimed at the F3-RES /F5L-RES competition pilots. Although designed around the Miles wing, the brief was to create a ‘cost-effective’ universal fuselage pod & tail unit to fit all 2m glider wings. To minimise postage/stock holding costs, you must provide your own carbon boom; details can be found below. There is no requirement for a plan to construct this fuselage as we provide full building guidelines.

Miles Wing:

The three-piece wing is a built-up rib and spar construction with strong spruce spars and balsa sheer webs throughout the span. The polyhedral tip panels are joined to the flat centre panel by mm steel joiners or bespoke carbon joiners can be applied to save weight. The polyhedral layout offers great stability in flight and for the electric version, we recommend the builder increases the tail-plane area by approximately 10% to improve overall handling. A ballast tube (not provided) is installed in the centre panel. 

The leading edge is fully sheeted; the aft section of the ribs is capped with balsa strips. This offers more than enough torsion stiffness. A spoiler should be installed on the top surface of the centre panel to ease up the landing approach and rescue from high altitudes. The wing airfoils are flat-bottomed for easy build-up. They are as thin as possible but as thick as necessary to supply enough strength in terms of bending. The airfoil transition shows 8.7% thickness at the root and 7.8% at the tip with an average camber of 2.2%.
